Abstract
This symposium will gather four outstanding speakers covering different cutting-edge aspects related to the importance of glycosylation in the nervous system. Glycobiology do represent an important research area within Neurochemistry, with a long dating tradition, and leading scientists in this field have been involved in the activities of ISN and of the sister societies in the past.Glycosylation is by far the most complex post-translational modification of proteins and involves as well membrane lipids, and the synthesis of a given carbohydrate chain involves several different genes. As the consequence, our understanding of the regulation of glycans expression is still limited; however we are starting to understand the important implications that the deregulation of glycans expression has for several major nervous system diseases. The symposium will cover diverse aspects of the role of glycoconjugates in the nervous system.
